British High Commission staff helped clean Wellawatte beach on Friday 10 June 2011 to mark World Environment Day (WED) which fell on 5 June.

The location was chosen because it has lost popularity due to the increasing amount of rubbish marring its shores.

The team of volunteers made a marked difference by clearing and removing 10 sack loads of debris and rubbish including broken glass.

The volunteers hope that their actions will encourage others to keep the beach clean while enjoying its resources.

Speaking after the event, Deputy British High Commissioner, Mark Gooding, said, “The British High Commission is committed to promoting environmental protection.

I’m delighted that we were able to play our part in keeping the Wellawatte Beach clean to be enjoyed by the community.”
