The lives of 350 school children and their teachers of 20 have improved tangibly at a school in Kelaniya, following the construction of water supply and sanitation infrastructure through corporate sector intervention.
The Kanduboda Maha Vidyalaya Delgoda Kelaniya now has an elevated water storage tank 30 feet high, a new block of toilets and washrooms and the school’s abandoned toilets have been repaired and restored under this initiative.
For the students and teachers of an institute with a history of 100 years, the generosity of the top apparel exporter donors, Brandix and Avery Dennison, a global leader in labelling and packaging materials and solutions means a more comfortable, healthy and sanitary environment in which to work and play.
According to Brandix CSR Head Anusha Alles, the school’s needs were identified by the group company T&S Buttons Lanka, after which Brandix invited Avery Dennison, which has its manufacturing facilities in the Biyagama Export Processing Zone, to join the effort to address them.
“With the support of the Avery Dennison Foundation, Avery Dennison Sri Lanka is extremely pleased to team up with Brandix in promoting clean and comfortable surroundings for the young students of Kanduboda Maha Vidyalaya,” Avery Dennison Sri Lanka General Manager Moji Akingbade said.
“The Foundation advocates community outreach by the employees of Avery Dennison around the world, in order to realise the Foundation’s vision, which is to inspire human promise towards a more intelligent and sustainable world.”
The water supply and sanitation facilities constructed through the corporate sectors were formally handed over to the school on 7 March 2013.
The support to the school by these two corporate sector entities does not end there. Plans are underway to donate computers and to contribute to a skills development program for the students.
The Brandix Group’s principal CSR efforts are driven by the central corporate theme of ‘water’ and constitute a long term commitment to increasing the availability of water and the provision of safe drinking water to those most in need.
The group’s community outreach initiatives also include providing wells and pipe-borne water to communities in and around its manufacturing plants and the improvement of sanitation facilities in needy areas.
