The distribution of 300 white canes among blind and visually impaired people will be one of the highlights of an event organised by the Colombo YMBA to mark the ‘White Cane Safety Week’. This will be held at Main Hall, YMBA Borella on Saturday, 19 October at 10 a.m.
This event is also aimed at educating the general public, that the white cane is not only a device to guide people with vision loss but also to instil in the minds of the fellow citizens that they deserve better care and help to enter the main society to play a meaningful role in the development process of the country.
Two guest speakers at the event will be Mallawaarachchige Priyantha, President of the Past Pupils Association of the Blind School, Ratmalana and Ishan Jalill, Program Manager, Sri Lanka Unites, who are both visually handicapped but doing immense services to the blind community. M. Ariyaratne, acting President of the Colombo YMBA and Anura Serasinghe, Vice President and Branch Secretary of Trust Funds and Skills Development Committee of the Colombo YMBA will also participate.
