A music room isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you hear of a school with deprived needs. It’s rather overlooked as it’s not considered a part of ‘education’. However aesthetic education is pivotal for the upbringing of a well-balanced individual.
With this in mind 20 students from the University of Colombo have embarked on a project named ‘Sathsara Udawa’, to build two aesthetic classrooms for a much-needed school located in Waduraba, which belongs to the Southern Province. The school, G/Welideniya Kanishta Vidyalaya consists of 257 students, but thus far has not had a suitable classroom for the students to carry out their aesthetic activities.
The students are carrying out this initiative as a part of their community development project which is a core course offered in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program offered by the faculty of Management and Finance, University of Colombo. The course involves in participating in an activity that would uplift the standards of a less fortunate community, or an activity that improves the current day-to-day activities of any part of the society.
The university students, representing team ‘Falcons’ have used many fundraising campaigns and has also had the support of Sudath Wijesiri, Asset Holdings Ltd., The Nayakkanda St. Mary’s Church and its youth society to fund the construction. The project has been implemented under the supervision of the faculty advisors Rajitha De Silva, Rajishta De Alwis and Erandi Thennakoon.
The project is now completed and was open to the use of students on 7 November.
