Pinnawala celebrates its 47th anniversary with People’s Leasing and Finance

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is renowned as a tourist destination in Sri Lanka, which has attracted a large number of foreigners and locals, marks its 47th anniversary.

In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Organisations, an awareness board on elephants for public display were exposed by Department of National Zoological Gardens Director General Shermila Rajapaksha, as one of the corporate social responsibility initiatives of the People’s Leasing and Finance PLC.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Deputy Director (Field)  Nawod Abeysinghe, Deputy Director (Pinnawala Zoo) Dilani Amarasinghe, People’s Leasing Kegalle Branch Marketing and Communication and Sustainability Manager Hishan Welmilla and Branch Manager Roshan Madawala were present at the event.

While realising the collective responsibility of educating the public regarding the elephant population in the Elephant Sanctuary, People’s Leasing and Finance PLC undertook this task with the objective of conserving the elephant resource under the direction of Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Deputy Director (Office) Mihiran Medawala, Development Officer Chandrika Priyadarshani  and other Administrative Officers.

The Orphanage was established in 1975 by Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Department with the objective of caring and protecting orphan elephants. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is also a nursery and a captive breeding ground for Asian wild elephants which is under the supervision of the Department of National Zoological Gardens since 1978.

People’s Leasing and Finance PLC, which marked its 25th anniversary in 2021, has been carrying out a number of eco-friendly projects. People’s Leasing and Finance PLC continued its commitment for the third year since 2018 to restore one hectare of degraded fern land adjacent to the Kanneliya Forest Reserve, Opatha in partnership with Biodiversity Sri Lanka engaging with 10 corporate, under the guidance of Department of Forest.
