NDB Senior Manager Sustainability Sharon De Silva and Negombo Branch Manager Wasantha Jayamanne handing over the grants and white canes to visually impaired entrepreneurs
National Development Bank PLC (NDB) joined the Sri Lanka Welfare Society of The Blind to commemorate ‘International White Cane Day 2022’. The bank donated 100 white canes and assisted 10 visually impaired entrepreneurs by giving them a grant to undertake self-employment work.
NDB Negombo Branch Manager Wasantha Jayamanne, who is a Qualified Credit Advisor, educated the gathering on financial wellbeing, entrepreneurship and the assistance they can receive from the bank for their self-employment activities. He also appreciated the valuable contribution they make to society through their self-employment activities and encouraged them to continue with their good work.
The ‘White Cane’ is not just a symbol of safety and self-respect for the visually impaired – it is a tool of independence fulfilling their mobility and direction requirements. White Cane Day is observed worldwide to recognise the movement of blind people from dependency to full participation in society. It is also a day to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world.
