In support of ‘International White Cane Day’ on 15 October, LIOC MD Manoj Gupta donated 200 white canes to the Sri Lanka Welfare Society of Blind Women.
Sri Lanka Welfare Society of Blind Women President W.M. Renuka appreciated the concern expressed by Gupta, who assured continued regular assistance to the best possible extent for the noble cause.
White Cane Day is an international awareness event to celebrate the importance of the long cane and to promote a safe environment for users. White Cane Day is intended to make everyone aware of the significance of a white cane and to encourage people, especially motorists, to take extra care when they see someone with a white cane.
For visually handicapped people, the white cane is an essential apparatus that gives them the ability to achieve a full and independent life. It allows them to move freely and safely from place to place—whether it’s at work, at school, or around our neighborhoods. Around one million persons suffer from blindness due to birth defects, cataract operations, and cancer or diabetic conditions.
Lanka IOC PLC, the only listed and one of the largest private sector companies engaged in marketing of petroleum products, contributes immensely towards the upliftment of society through its CSR initiatives and has always been steadfast in coming forward for discharging obligations towards the community. Various CSR projects are being undertaken with the intention of empowering and enhancing the lives of the underprivileged community.
