Continued inclement weather in the Hambantota district which resulted in water levels rising in several areas, caused a number of families to be displaced and seek temporary shelter at nearby Buddhist temples.
On appeals made by the chief incumbents of the Samudraramaya and Seetharamaya temples and the gramasevakas of the respective areas, the Hambantota International Port (HIP) came forward to provide aid to approximately 90 families who were impacted by the heavy rains and were unable to carry out their day-to-day activities or livelihoods.
35 families around the Samudraramaya temple with 105 family members, 55 families around the Seetharamaya temple with 200 family members, and three other displaced families with 35 family members were provided with dry rations for a week by the port.
