Grit Property Group Australia is a licensed property consultancy company with its Head Office located in Melbourne, Australia and its international branches located in Sri Lanka and India.
Having served many clients over the years, Grit has now taken the initiative with the establishment of the Grit Foundation in order to give back to the community by helping families in need in the way that they know best – by providing housing.
Over the last week, Team Grit Sri Lanka embarked on a journey to a small town in North Central Province, situated 300 KM away from the heart of Colombo for a life-changing purpose.
Grit Property Group is on a quest to help one hundred families build a house to call home, and most importantly to live in peace and keeping from harm’s way to those living in remote parts of Sri Lanka.
These families have just been handed over brand-new two or three bedroom houses made in a span of 45 days to two months at most, given on the prevailing weather conditions. Each family is required to find their own sand and granite and will be given the permit to do so. Everything else, including fees for the builders is provided by the company.
Welikanda is roughly 40 minutes away from Polonnaruwa, it is also known for one of the most drought-hit areas in the country, leaving villagers and wildlife at risk with no means or access to water on the worst days. The journey through the village was an 18 KM off-road drive. The only means of transportation for these villagers is the one scheduled bus that makes its round three times a day, with no transport on Sunday.
The most recent family is a family of six, including the grandmother, living in Sooriyawawa, Welikanda. With children aged four, 10, 12, 13 and soon to be born child. This family lives 100 meters from the riverbanks and is managing their day-to-day meals and plantation, but all of this is done whilst they live in constant fear of the intrusions of wild animals, especially elephants making their ways around, and destroying the only living space they have had made from clay.
“Being experts in property investment, the team at Grit believes that the place you call home is the no. 1 asset for any family towards their future. We sincerely hope to help many more families in the coming years,” Grit Property Group Managing Director Navin De Silva said.
