The YWCA of Sri Lanka staged ‘Charitha Atak’ recently at the Bishop’s College Auditorium in aid of the renovation and refurbishment of the Hostel.
Opened for students in 1956 in a house named ‘Rotunda’ in Kollupitiya, today, the hostel is a home away from home for 170 students, mostly rural, following professional courses in universities and educational institutions in Colombo. The 45-year-old building is in urgent need of renovation and refurbishment to provide a good standard of living for the students, young women, and others who make use of the building. Further, the building was designed by the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa. Therefore, it is of great architectural and historical value, enhancing the need for its refurbishment and maintenance, to preserve its architectural design and historical significance.
Attorney at Law Ravi Algama and Priyadarshani Algama graced the occasion as Chief Guests for the event. The auditorium was filled almost to capacity as the play began, and resonated with the sound of laughter throughout the performance. Wilson Gunaratne and his team did a splendid job in replicating the past and current political scenario of the country, in context to real life and factual occurrences, shedding light on the political predicament of Sri Lanka.
The effort by the fund-raising committee consisting of National President Mikelia Wickremesinghe, Fund-Raising Chairperson Clara Thatti, Manel de Alwis, Chandra de Alwis, Veronica Madawala, Malathi Wijesekera, Sonali Jaysekera, Keren Coilpillai and Kithminie Palihawadena was an immense success, and will undeniably contribute towards the cause. The National President and Officers, together with the Fund-Raising Committee, would like to thank all sponsors, advertisers, contributors, well-wishers, and members of the audience for their partnership in making this event a memorable evening of success.
