The Sri Lanka Vehicle Importers Association completed a week-long tour to Myanmar and returned this week after setting up formal arrangements to open up a business venture with Myanmar.
President Sampath Merenchige told the Daily FT that the tour was a success. During the visit they met Ministers of Industries, Commerce and Railway, and Chamber of Commerce and Customs Chiefs of Myanmar. They had assured that they would extend their fullest cooperation to open up an automobile sales centre.
Since the economic reforms, Myanmar is seeing an economic growth with an increasing demand for automobiles.
“Therefore we can easily enter the automobile market by setting up a company very soon. During the series of discussions with the Ministers of Myanmar, they mentioned the ancient business links between both the countries and that these ties can be re-established.”
The Vehicle Importers Association is the largest automobile association with more than 250 members, including dealers of importing reconditioned and brand new vehicles.
