Developing capability of human resources and equipment for sustainable growth

Association of TPM Practitioners in Sri Lanka organises the second international TPM summit in February 2016. Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) mainly focuses on improving human resources and equipment to reach its goals. This summit is themed around this aspect in order to enhance resources in an organisation to its sustainable growth. Keeping the momentum of growth in the current context as change is the only constant is highly challenging. 2016 summit will address these challenges and to share knowledge in overcoming these obstacles. The summit will be held at Hilton, Colombo on 19 and 20 February.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is an innovative management tool to manage the equipment and people in a manufacturing organisation. This concept is originated from Japan and the first company to adopt it is Nippon Denso in 1971. Nippon Denso is a Toyota Group company that manufactures parts for the automobile industry. By practicing TPM they have achieved tremendous results in terms of Cost, Quality and Delivery targets. Subsequently the concept was spread across the Japanese industries with the leadership of Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) as the governing body of TPM. 

TPM helped Japanese industries to outperform in the manufacturing and deliver quality products to the hands of the customers. Even today TPM is known as the secret weapon in Japanese success and most of the industries in Japan practice it as their operating system for manufacturing. After proven success of Japanese industries, TPM has spread all over the world and become an integral part of the manufacturing strategy of most of the successful organisations.  

Association of TPM Practitioners, Sri Lanka established three years ago to promote the concept of TPM in the country. The association is the network of around 500 TPM practitioners working in the leading organisations in the island with diverse professionalisms. The President, Executive Committee and Members of the association are strongly believed that TPM can help Sri Lankan manufacturing organisations to perform better in their businesses. The final objective of the association is to become a professional body in Sri Lanka for TPM and strengthening the national productivity of the country. TPM has become ideal tool for most of the manufacturing organisations in Sri Lanka considering their current level of operation and capability of expensive investment.

The Association of TPM Practitioners organised first ever International TPM Summit in Sri Lanka in 2015 which was a great success. This was the very first event in Sri Lanka on TPM that is open to the general public. Many foreign TPM practitioners shared their experience and success stories, which was very helpful for organisations and for budding TPM practitioners who are willing to thrive the business minimising losses in the process.  

The event has clearly demonstrated the possible gains by correctly implementing TPM. Few large scale manufacturing organisations in Sri Lanka that had already practicing TPM has demonstrated the gains they have achieved even in the early stage of the journey. One success story demonstrated how they have improve the existing equipment and avoid multi million investment and other success story demonstrated how they improve the existing equipment to obtain 35% increase in production by using TPM approach and tools. TPM Club of India is the governing body on TPM demonstrated the growth of TPM as a manufacturing strategy. The exponential increase in the JIPM TPM award winning companies demonstrated how TPM helped the Indian industries to outperform in their businesses. 

The presentation from first JIPM award winning company in India has demonstrated the hardships of the process and how they overcome it with the continual commitment of top management. A TPM award winning company that manufactured abrasives that belongs to large business conglomerate owned by India and USA demonstrated that the power of TPM to transform loss making ventures to supernormal profit makers. The summit has clearly demonstrated the capability and professionalism of the association to govern TPM in Sri Lanka. 

The theme for 2016 TPM Summit is ‘Developing Capability of human resources and equipment for Sustainable Growth’. Developing capabilities of human resources and equipment is a key for sustainable growth in any business. Employees are empowered to take decisions and are trained to be autonomous. In people, HRM aspects of job enlargement and job enrichment are cultivated to enhance capabilities. Conventional myths in capacities and performance of equipment are challenged and upgraded by re-engineering. 

Human Resource is the key resource for any organisation; developing and enhancing this resource will bring numerous benefits to any organisation. All presentations, case studies and activity board presentations in this summit are organised around this theme. Case studies from TPM award winning local and global companies, presentations from JIPM dignitaries, panel discussions with eminent panellists from HRM and Engineering will grace this summit.
