Total Quality Education Program inauguration

The Total Quality Education Program of Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ) was ceremonially launched at the Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC CAMPUS) recently in the presence of Ministry of Education Additional Secretary Upali Marasinghe, Ministry of Education Additional Secretary N.H.M. Chitrananda, Sri Lanka Association for Quality President Mangalika de Silva, , Quality Expert from Singapore Andre Lim, Vice President Prof Nalaka Jayakody, Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College Senior Director Ranjana T. De S.G. Punchihewa, and principals from 100 schools in the Western, Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, in keeping with a pledge given at the 18th Asia Pacific Quality Conference/5th National Convention in Quality 2012, at the Hotel Hilton, Colombo Sri Lanka. The three day training program consisted of 1 day awareness training for 100 principals and two day workshop on Certified Facilitator for 100 teachers from respective schools. The certified teachers are expected to take the leadership to introduce the program at their own school. Mangalika de Silva speaking at the launching ceremony said, “There is none more valuable than our students and they are our future. Total Quality Education (TQE) is a road map to lead schools to help students to become the best, by training and involving them in quality improvement projects and learn to take risks in implementing ideas, develop life skills such as teamwork, team building, leadership, presentation and inter-personal communication with peers and superiors. The goal is to develop the total quality student, an individual that makes quality a habit, skilful in application of quality tools and techniques, possess high moral integrity and compassion. TQE has a value that no student would be left behind. SLAQ enables necessary changes to bring about a highly productive and quality workforce of the future.” World class education and training The Sri Lanka Association for Quality will support this movement by providing training for principals and teachers, organising provincial and national quality conventions to give students the opportunity to be recognised and rewarded, together with the unerring continuous commitment to ‘World Class’ education and training by Platinum Sponsor/Event Partner Capt. Ajith Peiris (Group Managing Director/Ceyline Group of Companies), and a team lead by Ranjana T. De S.G. Punchihewa for CINEC. TQE is an extra-curricular program where schools and students will take up the program voluntarily. Unlike classroom academic learning TQE provides a practical approach to inculcating quality-habit, thinking culture and is proactive. TQE is a unique program developed specifically for Sri Lanka to achieve workforce readiness of students so as to offer to employers, productive and quality driven individuals. TQE program is initiated by SLAQ and Lanka Institute of Quality Management which provides the technical expertise and is supported by the Ministry of Education. Andre Lim, a holder of Master of Technology in Quality Control and Metallurgy from Brunel University, UK enlightened the program with his knowledge and expertise on Total Quality Student who should be taught young. Selecting teachers who are committed and dedicated towards student empowerment, being self-conscious as a stakeholder who could be self, parent, teacher, principal or company and the development of the workplace towards quality consciousness was the objective of his presentation. 21st century education was highlighted with programs built into high technology. Children were subjected to voluntary participation in building a friendly environment. The expected outcomes of the program are to modernise schools with emphasis on character building, happiness, quality, creativity and responsibility in students, leaving none behind. Enhance skills of teachers’ facilitation, observation, assessment; create interesting and engaging methodologies in teaching, to offer support and advice with proper feedback to students. Total Quality Students are experienced in quality management techniques and are able to conduct their duties effectively and efficiently, is confident and welcomes challenges, respecting those in authority and are in a positive relationship. Being the leading professional body in quality, SLAQ presents this program for the advancement of quality future for the nation. TQE program was well received by principals and teachers of the 100 schools already participated. CINEC Campus – recipient of ‘World Class’ – Global Performance Excellence Award 2012 – Education Organisation, (one and only Education Organisation in Sri Lanka), added strength to the TQE program as the main sponsor. Principals who attended the program had the opportunity to tour around CINEC Campus to observe the facilities including the ‘state of the art’ Bridge Navigator Stimulator – one of a kind in Sri Lanka.
