The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has decided to award a $20 million grant to Sri Lanka. WFP Deputy Country Director Nguyen Duc Hoang said that the grant is to be made for the years 2016 and 2017.
In addition the WFP stands ready to address any food insecurity in Sri Lanka triggered by natural disasters, the Deputy Director added.
Hoang gave this assurance during a recent meeting with Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake held at the Finance Ministry.
Discussions focused on the need for improving the nutritional status of schoolchildren in particular of the rural and plantation areas, and the Deputy Director pledged further assistance to improve nutritional levels of rural communities.
Nguyen Duc Hoang handed over the formal letter pertaining to the grant of $ 20 million to the Finance Minister at the meeting.
