Sri Lanka celebrated the second World Statistics Day on Tuesday with a national seminar at JAIC Hilton hotel in Colombo under the theme ‘Better Data – Better Lives’.
It was organised by the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) in cooperation with the Ministry of National Policy and Economic Affairs.
State Minister of National Policy and Economic Affairs Niroshan Perera was the Chief Guest.
Minister Perera making the keynote speech said: “Availability of reliable statistics and data are very important both for national and international activities. They contributed towards achieving an optimum level of performance for the betterment of the country since the day Sri Lanka got freedom in 1948.”
Messages from President Maithripala Sirisena, the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Policy and Economic Affairs were presented at the occasion.
Two special congratulatory video messages from Stefan Schweinfest, the Director, Statistics Division of UN and Alain Sibenerel, a representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) were also shown at the event.
