The 13th Sri Lanka Economic Summit scheduled to be held from 10 to 12 July will focus on a number of key focus areas in the Sri Lankan Economy. The third session of the event will explore the diverse opportunities for Sri Lanka in the emerging markets such as China, India, Brazil, Russia, etc.
The past few years have seen a slowdown in economic activity in the advanced economies which has been demonstrated by low or negative output growth, rising unemployment, rising fiscal deficits and indebtedness leading to even debt crises in some European economies.
On the contrary, emerging economies in East Asia, the BRIC economies, etc, have been progressing steadily, enhancing their share of world output and trade. Sri Lanka’s dependence on advanced economies remains significant. More than half of our exports are destined to the United States and the European Union.
With the emerging economies expected to play a more dominant role in the global economy in the future, Sri Lanka needs to focus more attention on the emerging market economies by identifying opportunities to diversify our exports to these markets and strengthening investments.
A keynote address will be made on the opportunities in the emerging markets and thereafter Sri Lankan investors who have successfully ventured to emerging markets will share their experiences in investing in these markets.
The keynote address of this session will be delivered by Dr. Razeen Sally, Associate Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. It will be followed by a panel discussion with Hayleys Agriculture Holdings Managing Director Rizvi Zaheed, Department of Commerce Director General P.D Fernando, Orange Electric Managing Director Kushan Kodituwakku, Brandix Lanka Chairman Ashroff Omar and Expolanka Holdings CEO Hanif Yusoof. The panel will be moderated by Nithya Partners Precedent Partner Ariththa Wickramanayake.
It is an ideal platform to understand the opportunities available in these emerging markets where the world economic growth will be focused on in the years to come.
