‘Fiscal Reforms: An imperative for sustained growth’ is the theme for the 2016 Annual Sessions of the Sri Lanka Economic Association (SLEA). The inauguration will be on 21 October.
At the Technical Sessions on 22 October the present fiscal policy and the resultant resource gap will be pinpointed. The magnitude of the debt crisis, and the policy environment that was necessary to encourage private investment – both domestic and foreign – will be among the issues on the agenda.
Chairing the Technical Sessions on 22 October will be Dr. Nimal Sanderatne, Professor PGIA, University of Peradeniya, Dr. Saman Kelegama, Executive Director, Institute of Policy Studies, Sarath Rajapathirana, Economic Advisor to the President and formerly Economist, World Bank; Dinesh Weerakkody, Chairman National Human Resource Development Council and Hemaka Amarasuriya, Chairman of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd.
Papers will be presented by K.M.M. Siriwardena, Assistant Governor, Central Bank; Dr. Priyanga Dunusinghe, Senior Lecturer; Dr. Dushni Weerakoon, Deputy Director, Institute of Policy Studies; Ven. Wimalaratana, Prof. of Economics; Dr. Shan Fernando, Research Economist; Malraj Kiriella, Vice President of Sri Lanka Economic Association; Dr. Ravi Ratnayake, Secretary General of Foundation Asia and former Director and Chief Economist at UN ESCAP; Prof. Sunil Chandrasiri, former Dean, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Colombo; and Jeewani Sewwandi, Research Officer, BOI.
Discussants will be Dr. Yuthika Indraratne, Additional Director, Economic Research, Central Bank, Prof. Srimal Abeyratne, Professor of Economics, University of Colombo, Dr. Anura Ekanayake former Chairman of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Janaka Wijayasiri Research Fellow and Head of International Economic Policy Research at the IPS.
