Continuing from its last chapter in the provincial arena, a workshop held in Trincomalee three months ago, the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) took up the initiative in hosting a seminar on ‘Conducting business responsibly’ for the business community in the Southern Province of the island recently at the Beliatta City hotel.
The participation of over 80 business men and women from the SME sector of the area were seeing at the seminar. Assisting SLID in this gesture was the Hambanthota District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC).
HDCC Vice President Sudantha Akmeemana delivered the opening remarks of the afternoon and was followed by the SLID Chairman Ronnie Peiris, who further impressed upon the need and relevance of organising such a seminar.
The participants were then addressed by the two speakers, Faculty of Law at the Colombo University Department of Commercial Law Head Indira Nanayakkara and Director of Finance, Ernst and Young Accounting and Advisory Services Nirmal Costa.
Indira provided a concise and insightful lecture on the various legal aspects relating to the forming and carrying out of a business such as the legal documentation and monitory requirements.
Nirmal Costa briefed the audience on the minimum finance, accounting and tax issues of running one’s own business which was considered a growing need amongst the business community in the area.
HDCC Director General Azmi Thassim whilst giving the closing remarks stressed on the participants the value of such a seminar, and the need for the business community to get further advice and direction if needed, to ensure they conducted their businesses ethically and responsibly.
SLID aims in taking the message of governance islandwide with the Northern and Eastern Provinces, being targeted next.
The necessary funds for this purpose would be generated through its fund raiser scheduled for the 1 March, at the Samudra Ball at the Taj Samudra Colombo, with Kumar Sangakkara speaking on ‘The sport in business’.
