Starting 4 July, the Saturday Good Market will be moving across the street from the Colombo Racecourse to Rajakeeya Mawatha.
The Saturday Good Market has more than 50 vendors with certified organic produce, natural food and snacks, eco-friendly home and garden products, handmade crafts and more.
The Good Market organisers had been looking for a weekend venue that was shady, easily accessible and large enough for all of the Good Market vendors to come together at a single weekly event. The space was finalised with support from the Colombo Municipal Council, the Police and Royal College. The new venue provides space for new stalls, environmental programs, activities for kids and special events.
The President and the Mayor both plan to attend the opening on 4 July.
The Good Market is a curated event, which means all vendors go through an application and review process to ensure they meet Good Market standards and their products are ‘good for the planet, good for the country and good for you’. The market began in December 2012 with 32 approved vendors. There are now more than 180 approved vendors and a Facebook following of more than 80,000.
The Good Market was started by volunteers. It is now registered as a not-for-profit Guarantee Limited company and operates as a mission-driven social enterprise. Good Market events were set up to be sustainable, but not profit-making. Stall fees are kept as low as possible to reduce the entry barrier for rural producers, social enterprises and new businesses that are socially and environmentally responsible.
The Saturday Good Market hours will remain the same: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Good Market organic and natural food shop is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. inside the Lakpahana grounds at 14 Philip Gunawardena Mawatha (Reid Avenue), Colombo 07.
