A Sri Lankan passenger who arrived from Sharjah by Air Arabia flight on 20 October early morning with over 31, 000 cigarettes worth Rs. 630,400 was detected by Customs officials.
The detection was made by Superintendent of Customs Parakrama Basnayaka and Ranjan Gaminipala and Assistant Superintendent of Customs Upul Wijepala. Deputy Director of Customs Darmasena Kahandawa made further investigation.
The suspect living in the Kekirawa area who possessed the illegal cigarettes was taken into custody when entering the country through the green channel. The suspect was fined Rs. 50,000 by Customs and released later as he paid the fine.
