A special ceremony will be held on 11 August under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena to present awards to farmers who pioneer toxin-free farming, President’s Media said yesterday.
The awards will be given to the winners of a competition, which was held with the aim of popularizing the concepts of sustainable conservation of irrigation system through toxin-free farming and efficient water management, in the Mahaweli farming community.
The President will present the prizes and awards to the ‘Mahaweli Maha Goviya’ and the winner will be selected from 104,000 Mahaweli farmers. The ‘Best Mahaweli Farmer Organisation’ among 1,007 farmer organisations will also be selected and awarded at the ceremony to be held in Mahaweli Buddhi Mandapaya in Embilipitiya.
This competition has been organised in parallel to the national food production program implemented since 2016 on the instructions of the President as the Minister in charge of the Mahaweli Development.
