The Government is seeking investment through a Private-Public Partnership program to develop 31 crops and animal farms owned by the National Livestock and Development Board (NLDB), Cabinet Co-Spokesman Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said yesterday.
This partnership program is to provide necessary assistance for small farm owners and to expand the national dairy, meat and egg production, with investment from private sector parties.
Karunathilake said the Government had already developed four large-scale farms in the Central and Southern Provinces, but some other farms with the same potential in other areas could not be developed due to the shortage of available public funds.
Therefore the Government has decided to develop them with PPPs in order to find relevant funds.
Accordingly, the proposal made by Rural Economic Affairs Minister P. Harrison to amend Act No. 11 of 1972, State Agricultural Corporations Act including necessary legal provisions for the above purpose, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
