Nine lorry drivers who pleaded guilty to violating the regulations of fruit and vegetable transportation were ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 7,000 each by the Maligakanda Magistrate on Wednesday.
The officers attached to the Consumer Affairs Authority had carried out a raid on Tuesday, arresting nine lorry drivers who transported fruits and vegetables without using plastic crates.
The raid had been carried out at the Peliyagoda area and nine drivers had produced before Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court. The lorries are reported to have come from Ragala, Nuwara Eliya and Welimada areas.
When the suspects were produced before Magistrate L. Liyanaarachchi, they were ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 7,000 each. The nine lorries which were taken into Consumer Affairs Authority custody were ordered to be released to the lorry drivers.
