At Jaffna International Trade Fair
The National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka (NCE), the only private sector Chamber exclusively serving exporters of Sri Lanka, conducted a program related to the above on 24 January at the Jaffna Library Auditorium.
The main objective of the program was to connect the exporters in the south with the producers in the north. This event was conducted Local Empowerment for Economic Development (LEED), under the NCE – International Labour Organisation (ILO) collaboration which is funded by AUSAID. In this regard the NCE has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of Yarlpanam (CCIY) to expand activities under the project.
NCE led a business delegation of six companies to Jaffna for this event. The following companies participated in the delegation; Samarasinghe Brothers, Bopitiya Auto Enterprises, Lanka Organics Ltd, Dhanusha Marine Lanka Exports Ltd, Wichy Plantation Company Ltd and Transfood Lanka Ltd. The requirements of the exporters comprised of coir products, organic products, fibre glass, fresh fruits, Palmyrah products and processed food.
CCIY Chairman Vignesh commenced the meeting by thanking the exporters for taking time to be present at the event. He also requested producers to ensure continuous supply of products to exporters, conforming to expected quality standards.
NCE Acting Manager – Technical Services Kasthuri Balasingam outlined the background of the project and the successful linkages it had already created. She also stated that this project will create a win- win situation for both the parties, although it would take some time to establish the business linkages for mutual benefit. CCIY had invited nearly 60 producers from the related cooperative societies, departments and other organisations. The producers displayed samples of products. The exporters had one-to one meetings with the producers related to their sector. The discussions were assisted by translators. The exporters expressed much interest in the products. The Chamber will be following up with the delegates for further development of the initial business linkages.
The NCE will be organising the next delegation to the North on 11 February. It will include field visits as well. Exporters who are interested in joining kindly contact Kasthuri on 4344221.
