National Chamber’s One Day Workshop on “Import Procedures”

The National Chamber of Commerce will conduct a One Day Workshop on “Import Procedures & Documentation “on Wednesday 7 September 2016 from 8.30 am to 4.30 p.m at the Chamber auditorium at No 450 D. R Wijewardene Mw, Colombo 10. 

The workshop is designed for those who are involved in importing, buying and sourcing from overseas. It provides an overview of the principles involved in successful importing, tips on how to avoid problems and to ensure smooth running of contracts, profitably. It gives practical information that will help protect your Company’s interests and maximise your opportunities in the international market.

Subjects that would be explored are:

  • Necessary import administration steps, Customs clearance at import, how duty and other levies are calculated and a study of the important clearance documents and costing. 
  • Temporary import schemes in operation -including the duty rebate scheme, temporary import for export processing schemes - TIEP 1 & TIEP 1V bonds procedures and warehousing.
  • Payment terms with regard to imports -- a review of the impact of each type (inc L/C's and Document Collections) on import payments.
  • Incoterms 2010
  • Regulations pertaining to imports & issuance of licenses for imports – trade policy and the role of the Import/Export Controller.
  • Typical import steps and import order administration
  • Tariff and commodity codes
  • Modes of transport

Participants will have a an understanding of the necessary skills to ensure due diligence, seek quotations and place orders efficiently, ensure correct documentation for customs clearance into Sri Lanka including VAT compliance and complete costing to ensure profitable trading. 

The workshop will be beneficial for those involved in sourcing goods from overseas, including sales, purchasing, production and accounts staff. It also provides a good overview necessary for senior managers who have to delegate responsibility. 

The resource person will be T Raviendrarajah, Deputy Director of Customs with over 30 years experience in this trade.
