Munchee receives Gold award for engineering excellence

The annual Sri Lankan Engineering Excellence Awards organised by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) was held recently at the Cinnamon Grand. Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL) excelled, winning an Engineering Excellence Award in the Large category at the event. The award was received by the CBL Group Deputy Chairman Ramya Wickramasingha and Group Director Engineering and IT Rasith Wickramasingha. Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapakse was the Chief Guest at the occasion.     Competitive awards The awards were competitive and looked at major projects undertaken, including energy saving projects, new technologies, technological transfer, engineering management and the promotion of innovation and creativity. The Judges also examined the volume of work handled, market share and the financial stability of the company as well as its use of indigenous materials, any national awards or registrations, including interaction with other professional bodies, Corporate Social Responsibility projects as well as employment opportunities created,  public acceptance and recognition and overall contribution to society. On a related note sustainable practice, safety, health and environment management including waste recycling and minimisation and quality assurance were also examined. CBL received the accolade as they had fulfilled all these criteria.     Focus on quality and innovation “We have created a working environment of best practice focusing on energy-saving programs, new technology, technological transfer, engineering management and innovation and creativity. The engineering team is vital in helping Munchee to become a market leader. We also focus on using local raw material as much as possible for our production. In doing this, we provide support to the country’s economy and social welfare. The award can also be attributed to CBL’s constant focus on quality and innovation,” said Director of Engineering and IT Rasith Wickramasingha.     Stringent judging process Applicants to the Engineering Excellence Awards had to undergo a stringent judging process by an eminent and independent judging panel. The winners were rewarded for supporting the industrial sector as well as making significant economic contributions to the country’s economy. The awards were given in medium and large categories, and prominent industry leaders applied for the awards in all categories. CBL is a well-established market leader, being the preferred choice of customers due to their position and focus on innovation.
