The world famous Chairman of Chrysler Lee Iacocca once said that ‘in a corporation, there can only be one guy in the end: the CEO’. Although it is primarily the Board of Directors of one’s company that makes its decisions, the liaison between the Board and its implementing arm which is the corporate management is fulfilled by none other than its CEO. Hence the role of a CEO is indeed that of utmost importance and is very often referred to as that of a balancing act. A good CEO is after all, able to lead the company amidst the challenges of a demanding Board, shareholders and an overworked staff. With these aspects in mind the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) will once again hold the much awaited CEO Forum on 30 September 2013 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (registrations and refreshments from 4:30 p.m.) at the Galadari Hotel Colombo. The Institute conducted its first CEO Forum last year which featured an august panel consisting of Ranjit Fernando formerly of NDB Bank, Suresh Shah of Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC, Rajendra Theagarajah formerly of HNB and Greg Young of Sri Lanka Telecom. The panel this year includes some of the top CEOs of the country on the likes of Ravi Dias, Husein Esufally, Felicio Ferraz and Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya. Titled, ‘Walking a Tightrope’, the panel brings together corporate leaders from the various business sectors of the country. Dias, a veteran banker will be contributing his experience of two decades in the country’s financial sector whilst Esufally represents a proprietary interest in the well known conglomerate, Hemas Holdings which has over the years diversified its business into the areas of FMCG, Healthcare, Transportation, Leisure and Power Generation. Dr. Wijayasuriya counting over 17 years of experience in the field, will represent the mobile telecommunication industry within the panel, heading one of the largest market capitalised companies on the Colombo Stock Exchange. Ferraz, on the other hand represents the multinational amongst the panel with his working experience in the sector over a period of 19 years. Hailing from Brazil, he took over the reins of Ceylon Tobacco PLC recently after a long stint with British American Tobacco in countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The panel discussion will be moderated by none other than the Founder and Editor in Chief of the popular corporate magazine, Echelon; Shamindra Kulamannage. The panellists will primarily focus on their experiences gathered over the years in their respective entities whilst paying closer attention towards the responsibilities of a CEO and the obstacles faced when implementing these objectives. The panel will also be opened to the participants during its Q&A session which will follow the discussion. The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors was set up as a forum to serve the corporate and professional development needs of Company Directors in private and public sector organisations and is the authoritative focal point on boardroom governance in Sri Lanka. It has a diverse membership of 550 professionals and directors from blue chips, quoted and unquoted private companies, family businesses and entrepreneurial ventures. The sponsors at the event are Ceylon Pencil Company Ltd. (Atlas), Chatham Luxury Watches and IronOne Technologies with Yes FM, Legends FM and MTV Sports as the Electronic Media Partners.
