Mobitel’s Liyasara – a mobile telephony tariff plan designed especially for women – was nominated for a Global Mobile Award earlier this week. Tailor-made to bridge the gender gap in mobile phone penetration, this special tariff plan was a first in the industry.

Liyasara was launched on International Women’s Day last year, as a tribute to Sri Lankan women. Making it even more invaluable, this package included a voice, SMS, data and VAS (Value Added Services) bundle accompanied by an insurance cover, otherwise unaffordable at this price.

Announcing the nominees today for the 18th annual Global Mobile Awards, the GSMA stated that they will present the awards on Tuesday, 26 February at the GSMA Mobile World Congress. A total of 158 nominees have been shortlisted for this year’s Global Mobile Awards. Over 600 entries and nominations for the 37 awards have been assessed, making it the largest ever number of honours to be presented at the Global Mobile Awards this year.

To select the nominees for the 2013 awards, more than 160 independent analysts, journalists, academics and subject matter experts throughout the world participated in the judging process.

The Mobile World Congress 2013 will be held from 25-28 February at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona.
