Newly-appointed Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday assured trade unions that the Chairmanship of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority will be given to a professional.
Addressing a special meeting with representatives of 10 trade unions attached to the Colombo Port, the Minister said: “No political influence will be enforced in appointing the new Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and a professionally qualified person with updated knowledge on the maritime sector will be appointed.”
He also assured trade unions that proper plans will be put in place to better harness Sri Lanka’s maritime potential. Samarasinghe will individually meet the unions to discuss matters concerning the port development.
He also thanked the trade unions for their contribution to make Colombo Port a successful hub in the region and thereby develop the economy.
