Laksala, market leader in the local gift and souvenir market, came under fresh spotlight this week as it emerged as a winner at the ‘Industrial Excellence Awards 2016’, by the Sri Lanka Chamber of Small and Medium Industries (SLCSMI).
Laksala, also recognised as Sri Lanka Handicraft Board, bagged the prestigious award as a ‘Provincial Winner – Western Province’ for its efforts in uplifting the efforts of Small and Medium Enterprises.
The recipient of the award on behalf of the institution was Laksala Director General/Chief Executive Officer Ali Ahlam Nawaz.
Laksala enables the numerous industries that supply goods to it to stay both profitable and in business. The entity strives to be a commercially viable, socially responsible marketing organisation which creates opportunities for rural products to enter mega markets, thereby enhancing the growth potential of the gift and souvenir category and adding value to the tourism sector.
Laksala follows a rigorous selection process when it comes to sourcing of products for its stores. Acknowledged for playing an important role in fostering the arts and crafts of the island at a national level, its products are sourced from the most authentic of manufacturers.
The SLCSMI Industrial Excellence Award is given to businesses in recognition of their valuable contribution to the country by acknowledging their achievements. The winners were adjudged by a panel of representatives from the Board of Investment (BOI), Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA), Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the University Body.
The Industrial Excellence Awards 2016 was graced by President Maithripala Sirisena, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen and Minister of Local Government and Provincial Council Faiszer Musthapha.
The SLCSMI established in 1963, is an independent, non-profit and non-political, voluntary body. SLCSMI also works with both local and international organisations and Government authorities, to support international business initiatives of small and medium industrialists. SLCSMI has served the SME’s in Sri Lanka for over 50 years.
