Smartphones and photography are two entities that are synonymous with each other, especially in this day and age. Recently, one of Sri Lanka’s fastest growing smartphones, Huawei, had launched their latest smartphone, the Huawei P9 which has been placed on a whole new level of its own in terms of smartphone photography.

The Huawei P9 also happens to be the first smartphone to have been co-engineered with global iconic brand, Leica Camera AG and has made history with this venture alongside Leica’s photographic knowledge being transported into smartphone devices.

At the launch of the Huawei P9, talented Sri Lankan photographers Devaka Senevirathne, Natalie Soysa, Siyath Ranathunge and  Jehan Seedin showcased a colourful photographic display in the form of photos taken using the Huawei P9 and produced an array of photographs taken in the manner they would portray Sri Lanka.

The P9’s dual-lens camera allows the user to capture both vivid colours and striking black and white images of unmatched precision, richness and authenticity as well as gives the user an opportunity to experiment with innovative visual effects to create unique images and content. An issue that persists in smartphones is battery longevity. With the Huawei P9, this issue can be forgone as the 3,000mAh high-density battery offers P9 users outstanding mobility and battery life.

Commenting on his view of the P9, renowned photographer Siyath Ranathunge said, “The Huawei P9 would definitely match people who would want to get into professional photography but are unable to afford a high tech DSLR camera. If you think you’re good but you can’t afford it, then this would be the perfect phone. The P9 is more refined and special as it attributes specifications of a DSLR inbuilt into a smartphone. If you take other smartphones in the market, you might not get the same control or even get creative with your images but with the P9, for someone who wants to go that extra mile, you receive all relevant technicalities in one device.”

Huawei had mentioned about the combination of image information from both sensors which would make the P9 camera 100% more light-sensitive than conventional smartphone cameras which should at least result in superior low light image quality. The P9 is also proficient in terms of other dual-camera tricks such as mimicking shallow depth-of-field. Some of the other features that the P9 is getting recognition for, an octa-core chipset and a fingerprint reader have been deemed as interesting by photographer Jehan Seedin.

He added, “The new Huawei P9, in my view, has got the potential to compete with a high-end DSLR. As this version comes with dual-lens, the image quality is superb and I enjoyed capturing images with it. Whether you’re a professional or an amateur, you can capture pictures with the same quality. It is also affordable, which is a plus. The fingerprint specification was also interesting and that feature stood out for me. You can unlock your phone in an instant. Also, when compared to many other devices in the market, the phone is very lightweight.”

Natalie Soysa commenting at the launch said, “I had a lot of fun with the new Huawei P9, the device comes with a range of capabilities. When you activate the pro mode the amount of definition and control is almost as good as the DSLR. It’s now my favourite thing to carry around when I don’t have my bulky gear with me. If you are a photographer or a photographer enthusiast just starting up this is the perfect companion to carry around.” Devaka Senevirathne shared, “Whenever you see something interesting as a photographer when your big bag of cameras is not with you, you just need to take out the Huawei P9 and shoot away. The picture quality is way higher than what you expect in a normal smartphone.”

The dual-lens camera captures more light and provides better clarity for both photos and videos. The P9 is also very efficient in low-light conditions, as the dual-camera design guarantees detail that can be captured.
