‘Hela Viru Rasa Udana-2014’, a food festival organised by the Sri Lanka Army will be held from 15 to 22 of April in Nuwara-Eliya. The multi provincial food festival is being organised aiming at promoting the time preserved and ancient food culture of the Sri Lanka. Set in the picturesque holiday hill station the food festival will feature different forms of food that is unique to each province and also common food items. This will be an ideal opportunity for local as well as foreign travellers who visit Nuwara-Eliya this holiday season to taste traditional food items on offer and learn more about them. The event gains special importance as it held in a period that people celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The initiative to organise the food festival was taken by the Commander of the Army in keeping with the Secretary Defence’s concept of providing opportunities to the youth to display their hidden talents. The unique feature of this event will be the demonstration of the varieties of food cultures of the island agglomerated in one place. It is also expected to develop the innate skills of the soldiers and improve their rapport with the public. The food show will be held on the banks of Lake Gregory and the Army expects that it will help to revive fast dying indigenous dishes and educate the public on its preparation, nutritional values and the importance of preserving it for posterity. Chefs from the Laya Hotel chain will be preparing Chinese and Middle East dishes. Food items prepared during the event will be sold at concessionary rates for schoolchildren. Army bands and calypso teams will keep the crowds entertained throughout the duration of the food fiesta and a booklet on culinary habits will also be released at the inaugural ceremony on 15 Tuesday.
