The first ever Governor’s Challenge Trophy- global commerce quiz will be held on 13 December in Colombo. The quiz has taken an international dimension with three major regional central banks participating along with the Sri Lankan corporate, banking and other sectors for the prestigious CBSL trophy.
The trophy was formally handed over to the Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal by the organising committee along with some of the main sponsors of the event.
The Governor’s Challenge Trophy (GCT) will represent the importance of world trade and its partners; the theme of the trophy is “global commerce excellence.”
It will symbolize Central Bank’s (CBSL) role and commitment for the Sri Lankan economy, global commerce and the trading community and will be a symbol of a new era for post conflict Sri Lanka where knowledge will be a key proposition.
The Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal who is the first pre and post conflict governor of Sri Lanka will present the prestigious trophy to the winners. The chief guest of the event is Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and special guest will be IMF Resident Representative Dr. Koshy Mathai.
The Shippers’ Academy Colombo, International Quizzing Association Sri Lanka (IQA SL) in association with Central Bank of Sri Lanka will launch the quiz whist the International Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka (ICCSL) has come forward to be the endorsing chamber.
The Export Development Board (EDB) is playing a key role in the event as the apex body supporting exports and global commerce. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) too has joined the efforts as the global hub partner. The other main sponsors for the event are Bank of Ceylon, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Expolanka Group, LB Finance and Sri Lanka Telecom and Sri Lankan Airlines is the official airline.
The quiz will be conducted in five rounds covering the following areas in global commerce:
=World Affairs (what has been in the news in the recent past)
=History and development of global commerce
=International Trade regulations and procedures
=Prominent personalities in global commerce
=Leading global business firms and Institutions
=Global transportation and logistics
General Knowledge (interesting trivia not related directly to global commerce)
Some questions will be based on visuals as well.
Nearly 50 teams represented by 250 participants will compete for the trophy from different sectors of the economy and industry. The significance is that large number of private sector corporate clients along with public sector institutions will join in the quiz and three major central banks from the SAARC region too will take part making it the first international global commerce quiz in Sri Lanka.
