The first ever unique Farmer Empowering Information System will be launched today under a multi-stakeholder initiative.
The Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCSIL) has developed a system to capture information (raw data) of farmers including their produce. This unique venture is to empower farmers with information using a mobile platform which intends to provide information such as; daily market information; updates on location-based weather and climate changes, early warnings, information on pest infestations, information on farmer-friendly financial products, market opportunities, land location and resource mapping, crop cultivation on-demand base situation and usage of right fertiliser & pesticides.
The system will be linked with various service providers for information dissemination. This is being implemented in the Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Mannar, and Vavuniya districts.
The system was launched yesterday at a ceremony at the Taj Samudra.
This initiative is supported by the “Socio-Economic Development for Conflict Affected Communities of North and East Sri Lanka”, project funded by the European Union and implemented through Oxfam GB.
FCCISL is the National private-sector implementing partner for Oxfam GB in EU-ACAP 2009-2013 (European Union - Assistance for Conflict Affected People) project which works with the smallholder farmers in the Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya and Mannar districts.
