Employees of Postal Department union stated that the Government is planning to privatise the department. The Ceylon Postal Services Union (CPSU) has said that up to 15 main post offices in the country have been shut down as an attempt to privatize the department.

Head of the CPSU Jayantha Wijesinghe has said that several main post offices have been converted into sub post offices. He explained that the move has resulted in people turning towards agency post offices owned by the private sector.

According to Wijesinghe, most of the Government post offices are to be sold to private agencies in a move to privatise the country’s postal service. He has added that the union has raised concerns over the current situation with the Post Master General.

Sri Lanka’s postal service is declining in performance and popularity as the country’s telecommunication services have made vast improvements to their services and the inefficiency in postal service and lack of programs to attract more consumers have contributed the decline in the Postal Department.
