Dr. Harsha Cabral appointed to International Court of Arbitration in Paris

Sri Lankan President’s Counsel Dr. Harsha Cabral was appointed a Member of the prestigious International Court of Arbitration at the World Council of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) held in Torino on 9 June.   

He was nominated by the International Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka. Dr. Cabral is a senior legal practitioner in Sri Lanka with 28 years active experience specialising in the fields of Company Law, Intellectual Property Law, Commercial Law, International Trade Law and Commercial Arbitration. He has been a President’s Counsel for nine years and commands an extensive practice in the aforementioned fields of law. He holds a PhD in Corporate Law, lectures at several universities and is a regular speaker at Corporate BUP_DFT_DFT-5-1Law forums here and abroad.  

Dr. Cabral is a member of the Law Commission of Sri Lanka, a member of the Council of Legal Education in Sri Lanka, a Council member of the University of Colombo, a UGC Nominee on the PGIM (Post Graduate Institute of Medicine), a member of the Advisory Commission on Company Law in Sri Lanka, a member of the LJRP (Legal and Judicial Reforms Project), a member of the Ministerial Committee appointed to develop Commercial Arbitration in Sri Lanka, a member of the Corporate Governance Committee (CA-SEC), a member of the Board of Management of the Institute of Chartered Accountants on  Management Studies, a member of the Task Force to amend corporate laws (CA Sri Lanka), a Council member and member of the board of management of ICLP and Course Director IClP on Commercial Arbitration.

Dr. Cabral was one of the main architects of the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007 and has been involved in drafting several important commercial statutes in Sri Lanka. He is the Chairman of the Tokyo Cement Group of Companies and holds directorships of several listed and unlisted companies in Sri Lanka including Hayleys Plc, DIMO Plc, LOLC Finance Plc, and Alumex Plc to name a few.

Dr. Cabral counts enormous experience in the filed of commercial arbitration here and abroad as he has served as Arbitrator, Co-Arbitrator and as counsel in large number of arbitrations local and international and has been sent by the Government of Sri Lanka to advise the Government of Maldives on Commercial Arbitration.

He is the author of several books and papers on Company Law, Intellectual Property Law, International Trade Law, Commercial Law and Commercial Arbitration. The International Court of Arbitration sits in Paris for its sessions and Dr. Cabral will be requested to attend the sittings several times a year.
