Sri Lanka Consul General’s office in Shanghai, China launched a promotion campaign to create awareness on “Ceylon Tea”.
The event was organised on May 11. Black Tea, or Hong Cha as called in Chinese, is a popular beverage in Shanghai.
The campaign targets to promote Sri Lanka’s famous teas as a high end product in China.Acknowledging China as the nation that introduced tea drinking to the world, the Government of Sri Lanka had decided to start its global campaign from Shanghai. The launch consisted of tea tasting opportunities at several shopping malls and public venues across Shanghai.
Addressing the gathering Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to China Ranjith Uyangoda focused on Sri Lanka’s post-conflict development agenda which included trade, investment and tourism promotion. He elaborated on the decision made to promote Ceylon Teas particularly in the Chinese market. Ms. Janaki Kuruppu, Chairperson of Sri Lanka Tea Board made an informative presentation on Sri Lanka’s tea industry, its past, present and its future aspirations. The event was well attended by high ranking Chinese Government officials, business personnel, especially those involved in the tea trade, the media and the public.
