The 19th Commonwealth Games that brought in glory to Sri Lanka was held in New Delhi from 3-14 October 2010 in a grand scale with the participation of sports personnel from 35 Commonwealth nations.
This multi-sport event held every four years, involves the elite athletes of the Commonwealth nations. Similar to many Olympic sports, the Games also include certain sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball.
A contingent consisting of 93 athletes represented Sri Lanka at the recent Commonwealth Games; the team participated in 14 sports disciplines. The Sri Lankan players bagged three medals which included a gold medal, silver medal and a bronze medal.
Identifying sports as a fundamental factor in holistic development of a human being, Asian Alliance Insurance partnered the Sri Lankan contingent who participated in the 19th Commonwealth Games, as the official travel insurer.
Udeni Kiridena, General Manager – Non Life at Asian Alliance Insurance, who is a reputed international boxing referee, accompanied the contingent as team general manager.
