WIM Maldives which is a Chapter of WIM Sri Lanka celebrated its second annual WIM Awards, Maldives on 13 July in Male.At this event, 29 women received the Professional and Career Women Awards 2019. The awards were given out during a ceremony held at the auditorium of the Faculty of Health Science.
The event was graced by Minister of Gender, Family and Social Service Sidhatha Shareef, Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Maleeh Jamal, and Minister of Housing and Urban Development Aminath Athifa, who were amongst the Guests of Honour, with State and Deputy Ministers and Corporate Heads in attendance.
WIM Maldivian Chapter President Minha Faiz Rashaad said, “Equal opportunity is denied to women in the Maldives despite its Constitutional authority and polices adopted.”
The keynote speaker Roshanie Jayasundera Moraes said, “Fearless women do things which the world labels as crazy, and those women have brought change in the world and I say be crazy so that you can be the change.”
Mariyam Waheeda was awarded Woman of Year at the awards. Waheeda has served in numerous State and Government positions for 42 years. At the age of 67, the mother of five continues to take part in national marathons, including a national record on 19 April with a full marathon.
Women in Management Founder and Chairperson Dr. Sulochana Segera said, “WIM Maldives membership is very young. Many of the members and its winners are well educated and hold many professional positions. But it’s time that WIM Maldives start spreading their wings to other Islands and launch women empowerment and addressing Island centric issues, such as youth and family issues. Award recipients can be the mentors for these projects.”
