Two research laboratories in the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at the University of Jaffna were ceremonially opened on 25 November by the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor S. Srisatkunarajah.
The Laboratory for Energy Conversion and Storage (LECS) at the Department of Physics and the Chemistry Research Laboratory (CRL) at the Department of Chemistry have been fully renovated and upgraded with necessary high-tech instruments under the AHEAD-DOR (Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development – Development Oriented Research) project of the World Bank. Development of novel electrolyte and electrode materials for sodium-ion and magnesium-ion batteries is the primary goal of this project.
The research team comprises Dr. K.Vignarooban (Principal Investigator), Prof. K. Velauthamurty, Dr. G. Sashikesh and S. Senthuran from the Faculty of Science of the University of Jaffna and Dr. Athula Wijayasinghe from the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) in Kandy.
This project is an international collaborative work with the Arizona State University – USA and Chalmers University of Technology – Sweden.
