The Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou initiated and organised a Sri Lanka investment webinar on 29 April, in cooperation with the Guangdong Department of Commerce, with the participation of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka. Approximately 130 persons participated from 95 companies and related government entities in Guangdong Province, in the webinar.
In a separate meeting before the commencement of the webinar Consul General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou Priyangika Dharmasena, briefly met with Deputy Director General Zhao Qing, and discussed on enhancing further cooperation on trade and investment between Guangdong Province and Sri Lanka and both sides acknowledged that the forthcoming investment webinar on Sri Lanka will boost towards that end.
At the webinar, Consul General Dharmasena, in her speech referred to Guangdong Province being a rich province in China, a manufacturing hub, ranking number 1 in China in its GDP and home to major manufacturing industries, including telecommunication, electronics, automobile, power supply, science and technology, also notably included 14 enterprises listed among the Fortune 500 companies. Consul General Dharmasena enticed large and small companies alike in Guangdong Province, to invest in Sri Lanka, taking advantage of the existing attractive factors, including the strategic location, access to key markets, talented workforce and investment protection.
BOI Chairman Sanjaya Mohottala after a brief speech, gave a detailed presentation mainly focusing on the investment opportunities available in the manufacturing sector, namely pharmaceuticals, apparel, electronic components, rubber products and automotive parts. Chairman Mohottala also presented the incentives provided for foreign investment, the investment climate and advantages of investing in Sri Lanka.
Guangdong Department of Commerce Deputy Director General Zhao also gave a speech in which he said that his Department “will continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the Board of investment of Sri Lanka and the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou, so as to build a bridge for Guangdong enterprises to participate in the economic construction of Sri Lanka and provide high quality services for promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation”.
Two testimonial videos by a successful Chinese investor in knitted fabrics and of an American investor on the manufacture of sails for racing boats were played to the audience which provided credence of the conducive investment environment existing in Sri Lanka.
The webinar concluded with a question-and-answer session, consisting of queries related to the construction, fisheries, education sectors, which were aptly answered by the Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.
