Expo 2020 Dubai is a global trade exposition showcasing strengths, capabilities and innovation of over 190 countries and is set to host over 25 million visitors from across the globe. This Expo is one of the longest standing and largest international events to take place in the world and the Dubai EXPO 2020 will be the first of its kind across Asia and Africa.

Held once every five years and lasting over a period of six months, the World Expo aims to provide a global forum for innovation and creativity, and exposure for industry and commerce, business opportunities and alliances, in a backdrop of global co-operation.

Sri Lanka’s participation at the event is being spearheaded by the Export Development Board (EDB) together with the public and private stakeholders ensuring the effective implementation of the project.

Sri Lanka became an official participant at the World Expo 2020 Dubai, as the Government of Sri Lanka signed the Official Participation Contract with the ‘Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau’ on 8 July. The high level delegation to the UAE for the Contract signing Ceremony was led by Deputy Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Nalin Bandara.

Sri Lanka will have its pavilion at the six-month-long Expo 2020 Dubai in the UAE in an area of 212 sq. m. under the sub theme of ‘Opportunity’, and the pavilion will be branded under the title ‘Island of Ingenuity’.

The pavilion will highlight Sri Lanka’s rich portfolio of offerings as well as promote it as an export hub driven by innovative products and services giving priority to the identified focus areas in the National Export Strategy, thereby attracting Foreign Direct Investments, especially for export-oriented manufacturing. Up to now, 20 sector proposals has been received by the EDB to showcase its capacity at the Sri Lanka pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai along with Sri Lanka Tourism and the Investment.

This EXPO will be an ideal opportunity to increase, especially the market share for Sri Lankan products and services internationally particularly in the Gulf Region and access to the regional markets, capitalising on UAE’s position as a strategic logistic hub and a key access point to the emerging markets in the Middle East and the African Continent to generate international interest and participation in Sri Lanka’s developments in innovation, trade, tourism and investment.

A meeting has been scheduled on 19 August at the EDB for participants/prospective participants from the product sectors to discuss the further arrangement about this program.
