The relationship between Sri Lanka and China have a cordial history of over 2000 years, and recent events in China, due to the spread of coronavirus, has affected both nations. The people of Sri Lanka have extended the hand friendship to the Chinese people currently residing in the island. The President of Sri Lanka China Trade and Investment Council Sun Lai Yung believes that despite trade wars, coronavirus and natural disasters, China will emerge stronger than anticipated in 2020.
The Chinese people are strong when put under test and have bravely fought many wars since 1830 onwards till 1949. The recent spread of the coronavirus within China and globally has given impetus to be prepared for an unlikely calamity. But China and its people as a nation become more determined under hardship.
President Xi Jing Ping’s leadership China will fight this pandemic with the tremendous resources China can muster. Many nations came to assist in containing the coronavirus and its victims with their medical teams. Sri Lanka, as a Buddhist nation, was the first to evoke the blessings of the Buddha by the chanting of pirith to heal the sick in China and globally. The President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapakse offered Sri Lanka black tea as a token of friendship to the people of China.
The President and the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka China Trade and Investment Council are confident that China will return to normalcy soon and expedite her economy stronger than predicted. Towards such recovery, Sri Lanka can play a key role in welcoming Chinese investments and trade to promote its exports, IT knowledge, share bilateral information and welcome tourists of both nations warmly. China will move forward with the Belt and Road Initiative in the coming months with new vitality and Sri Lanka will benefit through China’s financial and technological assistance.
The test of true friendship between nations is the unity during hardship and challenges, where both nations must stand united.
