SLIIT’s Faculty of Humanities and Sciences launched an insightful CSR project titled ‘Guru Viru’ recently as a teachers’ training program with the aim of empowering and developing educators with vital skills and attitudes necessary to strengthen the field of education.

The program caters to professionals in the education sector including lecturers, principals, teachers in schools and teachers working in the pastoral system, etc.

The main objectives of the program are the exchange of knowledge and experience by subject matter experts, and the education and the development of the teachers by enhancing their skills. SLIIT is firmly committed in empowering educators and providing this as a national service through free of charge sessions enabling all teachers across the country to benefit.

The inaugural Guru Viru program was successfully concluded on 23 June in collaboration with the Mahaweli National College of Education, Polgolla. A session on ‘Action Research’ for trainees of the college was conducted. Over 400 interns and lecturers attended the event. The session was led by SLIIT Faculty of Humanities and Sciences School of Education Senior Lecturer Dr. Virajith Gamage.

Mahaveli National College of Education President Kanthi Liyanage was instrumental in supporting the event and coordinating with the National Colleges of Education to conduct the sessions.

Following the success of this session, several other workshops have been conducted to-date. These include one on the use of SPSS software vital for statistical analysis, which was recently held for lecturers of the Mahaweli, Peradeniya and Siyane National Colleges of Education. Over 100 participants attended the thought-provoking session seminar conducted by SLIIT Faculty of Humanities and Sciences Department of Mathematics Head Senior Professor T.S.G. Peiris.

According to Faculty of Humanities and Science Dean Dr. Malitha Wijesundara, as there is significant demand for programs of this nature from the National Colleges of Education, SLIIT aims to continue to implement several workshops in the future.
