The Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID) will host a webinar titled “Sri Lanka’s Economic Crisis: Lessons from Greece” on 20 September 2022 at 4 p.m. featuring Greece former (2009-2011) Finance Minister Dr. George Papaconstantinou and subsequently Environment, Energy and Climate Change Minister. The session will be moderated by SLID Chairman Faizal Salieh.
The webinar will focus on Dr. Papaconstantinou’s experience as former Finance Minister where he played a key role during the Eurozone crisis, negotiating Greece’s loan agreement with the EU and the IMF and instituting policies to reduce the fiscal deficit and restore economic competitiveness. As Energy Minister, he brought legislation to liberalise the energy market and increase renewables, pursued Greek participation in international gas routes and the exploration of Greece’s hydrocarbon potential.
Dr. Papaconstantinou is an accomplished professional who has served the Government at the highest level. His political experience is matched by technical expertise in economics, finance, energy, environment and technology issues, gained in international organisations and academia.
He has a solid academic background, an international outlook, an in-depth knowledge of European issues, excellent communication skills, an ability to motivate people, manage successfully diverse teams of professionals and engineer change in complex organisations.
Previously, a Member of the Greek National Parliament (2007-9) and of the European Parliament (2009) he worked for 10 years at the OECD in Paris, advised the European Commission as well as leading think-tanks, and served as Board member of OTE S.A., the largest telecommunications company in Greece.
