The proposals in the Budget Speech for 2019 have been cloaked in the language of ‘economic freedom’ and ‘empowerment’. For the Government and the supporters of its economic agenda, these proposals are considered a solution to a number of structural social and economic issues. But behind the rhetoric, what do these proposals mean for the most vulnerable people?
Today, Mass Movement for Social Justice (MMSJ), Liberation Movement (LM) and Law and Society Trust (LST) will launch a collection of articles that critically analyse the proposals made in the Budget Speech for 2019. The launch will be accompanied by an open discussion on the Budget proposals and its implications for workers, women, war-affected communities, and the national economy.
The launch and discussion will be held at 2 p.m. at the Ceylon Mercantile Union on 3, Bala Tampoe Lane, Colombo-3.
