The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has introduced a hotline specially to address the issues faced by electricity users following the recent tariff hikes.
“We took this measure considering the increasing number of complaints that we receive following the new electricity tariff. We want to make sure that there is a smooth transition and help electricity users in every way that we can to understand the electricity bill, tariff calculations, and minimise inconveniences faced by the electricity users,” PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said.
The electricity users can now contact the officials of the PUCSL via a dedicated hotline +94 77 568 7387 to obtain clarification on the new electricity tariff.
On 10 August, the electricity regulator approved the request by Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to increase the electricity tariffs by 75% on average for all categories from yesterday, after nine years, following a public consultation process.
Total electricity users in Sri Lanka at present are 7.8 million, while 6.7 million of which are domestic users, 1.1 million are general purpose users and 1.4 million use below 30 units per month. A total of 1.7 million use 90 units, while 4.8 million use below 90 units each month.
As per the new electricity tariff hike, the domestic category of below 30 units will be charged 25% of the cost, but they get 75% of subsidy. The category of 31- 60 units is charged 40% of the total cost, extending a 60% subsidy. Only 50% of the actual cost is charged from the category 61-90 units.
The Commission has also taken steps to encourage electricity consumers to conserve electricity and promote renewable electricity generation with the tariff revision decision.
In addition to the above hotline, electricity users can connect with PUCSL by calling 11 239 2607 or 11 239 2608 and [email protected] or [email protected] or www.facebook.com/pucsl.
