A total of 12,970 low-income families in Colombo will receive their March relief package, which had been delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, between 8-10 April, officials announced yesterday.

The relief package was initially set to be distributed at 15 Post Offices, but the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) had been unable to do so since March. As such, the CMC has now taken measures to distribute the relief packages, ensuring public safety and adherence to health sector guidelines.

As it stands, beneficiary information, including photographs, are being logged in a database, with the relief packages from April onwards to be made using e-platforms like eZ Cash and mCash.

According to Colombo Municipal Commissioner Champika Roshini Dissanayake, the CMC spends approximately Rs. 15-16 million on a monthly basis to provide relief packages to low-income families.
