A group of representatives from 18 major companies led by Xie Shuangcheng, Vice Mayor of the Hangzhou Province in China, toured the Hambantota district on 11 May. The goal was to identify investment opportunities in Sri Lanka, especially in the Hambantota Special Industrial Zone.
The group participated in a discussion with entrepreneurs of the Hambantota District at the Administrative Complex. The meeting was presided over by Suneth Lochana, Additional District Secretary of Hambantota. Gamini Sri Ananda, Vice Mayor, Hambantota MC also participated the discussion, later accompanied by officials from the China Harbour Company and Board of Investment during an observation tour of the Industrial Zone.
This program was jointly organised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Hanzhou Committee (CCPIT) and the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC). CCPIT and HDCC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate and coordinate activities related to future investment opportunities.
The group of investors met the business community at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in Colombo on 10 May. They also met with senior officials from the Board of Investment and the Southern Development Board.
The President of the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce D.W. Upul, emphasised that like China, many other countries have shown a great interest in investment opportunities available in the Hambantota Industrial Zone. The chamber is continually coordinating with all interested investors in the area which would ultimately drive economic development of the district.
