International Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (ICCSL) representing a voice for the business and industrial sector yesterday in a statement stressed the importance of the decision to be made by the legislature on electing the head of State, who would be endowed with the paramount obligation to chart the course for the nations’ future.
ICCSL said it extends support for democratic governance and holistic growth based upon transparency, accountability and rule of law which would consequently steer the nation towards a healthy economic landscape for over 22 million Sri Lankans.
“To overcome the current economic situation and political stability dependent entirely on the deliberation of the legislature exercising the sovereignty of the people’s preferences for the protection of the State, the economy and the financial system in Sri Lanka. These challenges could be intelligently addressed with the right directions taken by an impartial, patriotic decision of the members of parliament by electing the most competent legislator who could lead the country,” ICCSL said.
The new economic directions should support the export, import and tourism industries, SMEs and other businesses which contribute largely for the sustainability of the nations’ GDP.
ICCSL also emphasised that the new elected President should be able to prioritise the allocation of fuel for the local and export supply chain, transport, distribution, tourism and export support services and address the food security, medical shortages, fuel and gas shortages and other economic issues of Sri Lanka.
It said national policy restructuring, establishment of internal stability, fostering international trade, tourism, agriculture and education, sustainability of strong and healthy diplomatic relations, protection of foreign and local investments and industries, reducing unemployment remains part of the impending decision to be made by the legislators.
ICCSL also urged the Parliament to exercise the “sovereignty” of people “for the people of the country” according to rule of law and thereby secure peace, stability and development for the nation.
